Davao Internet Freedom Forum

The Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA), in cooperation with the Philippine Internet Freedom Alliance (PIFA), the Dakila Davao Collective, and the Davao Bloggers Society organized the Davao Internet Freedom Forum last November 27, 2013 (Wednesday) from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Apo View Hotel, 150 J. Camus Street, Davao City.

Representatives from different organizations joined in discussing how crucial for us stakeholders to protect a free and open Internet. The central message for this activity is to uphold Internet Freedom – so that our rights and freedoms offline, will also be respected, promoted, and protected ONLINE.

Professor Dominique Cimafranca from Ateneo de Davao University Computer Studies explaining how Internet works and who controls the Internet. He also discussed about the landscape of Internet and asked the participants how well do you know the Internet.

Miss Nica Dumlao, Program Coordinator of Foundation for Media Alternatives updating on Internet Freedom Proposed Legislations in the Philippines. She also discussed the threats and issues on the Internet Freedom.

Atty. Marnie Tonson form the Philippine Internet Freedom Alliance Legal Team on his discussion about Internet Freedom versus surveillance, defamation, and censorship. Also discussed about Internet as enabler of Human rights. Mentioned some privacy law about the Internet and the user.


The Internet had its great ability to inspire and mobilize peoples across the country and around the globe, as well as to uphold human rights and democratic principles. However, governments and other powerful institutions have to increase also the power of regulating and actively police the Internet and the user. In this age, people are into Intenet so its really important that we know and we are aware on these matters. Be vigilant in using the Internet.
